THE SOUTH COOK COUNTY MOSQUITO ABATEMENT DISTRICT 15500 DIXIE HIGHWAY, (P.O. BOX 1030) BOARD OF TRUSTEES: GENERAL MANAGER:
Message from the Manager’s Desk A very warm spring started the 2012 mosquito season approximately three weeks early. One of the warmest Marchs on record exacerbated mosquito development and put our larviciding program in full action. The hot weather continued through the summer and was joined by drought like conditions. This was cause for great concern. The 2002 and 2005 WNV outbreaks were preceded by these same weather conditions. The Districts' first WNV positive mosquito pool was June 8th (some Districts had positives earlier) and the percentage of positives continued to increase and peaked at 93% on July 26th and 27th. Areas in the District with repetitive positive mosquito pools were scheduled for nighttime adulticiding. This has been the most sever season since 2002. The South Cook County Mosquito Abatement District continued a high level of surveillance for the presence of mosquito-borne diseases, and maintained a close liaison with the Illinois and Cook County Departments of Public Health, and local Public Works and Health agencies in an effort to prevent these diseases. We are consistently stressing the importance of having a good to excellent survey and surveillance on all mosquitoes in our District and using larviciding as our primary control method to accomplish our goal. Announcement It is important that residents and businesses eliminate stagnant water on their properties. To avoid mosquito bites and prevent West Nile Virus disease, these precautions are recommended:
